CHAMISA QUITS OPPOSITION PARTY CCC AFTER ELECTION BATTLES
In a big surprise that has shocked Zimbabwe’s politics, Nelson Chamisa, the well-known leader of the opposition party Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has said he is leaving the party. Chamisa’s decision comes after he lost two close and disputed elections to President Emmerson Mnangagwa. This is a big moment for Zimbabwe’s opposition politics.
In his statement, Chamisa said, “With immediate effect, I no longer have anything to do with CCC.” This means that the CCC, a party that was closely linked to Chamisa, might now struggle to survive without him. Many are comparing this to what happened to the previous opposition parties, MDC-T and MDC Alliance, which also fell apart after Chamisa left them during times of conflict.
Chamisa says the problem is that the ruling party, Zanu PF, has taken over the CCC. He claims that Zanu PF agents have “infiltrated, contaminated, bastardized, and hijacked” his party. He says that this is a strategy by Zanu PF to control the opposition while hiding their own failures. Chamisa believes that Zanu PF is using more modern ways to crush the opposition, not through violence but by weakening it from the inside.
However, some people blame Chamisa himself for the fall of CCC. They say that the party’s “strategic ambiguity,” or lack of clear rules and structure, made it easy for others to take control. The CCC did not have a proper constitution, leadership, or even clear office-bearers, making it very weak and open to manipulation. Critics also say that relying too much on one person, like Chamisa, is a big problem in Zimbabwe’s politics.
The trouble in the CCC reached its peak when a man named Sengezo Tshabangu, who called himself the secretary-general, claimed leadership of the party. Tshabangu and his group started removing CCC MPs, senators, and councillors from their positions. This action, supported by Zanu PF’s allies, caused more chaos and was seen as a way to destroy the opposition from within.
Chamisa’s exit from the CCC leaves his supporters, especially those in parliament, in a tough spot. Many fear they will be the next targets of political games or might lose their positions. Some worry that Zimbabwe is slowly becoming a one-party state, where only Zanu PF has power, which would be dangerous for democracy in the country.
In his final comments, Chamisa reflected on what the CCC was meant to be. He said it was supposed to be a party focused on God and the people. But now, he believes that the CCC has become like Zanu PF, filled with selfish people looking to make money and gain power. This is far from the CCC’s original goals of serving the citizens.
Despite all of these problems, Chamisa says he will not give up on his political career. He believes there is still hope for finding true leaders who care about serving the people and doing what is right. Chamisa stressed that the people of Zimbabwe should not give up, and the fight for true change and freedom must go on.
Chamisa’s departure is a major event in Zimbabwe’s politics. He leaves behind a story of strength and determination, even in difficult political times. His decision to leave CCC might bring big changes to Zimbabwe’s political future. It is now a time for new ideas and new leadership that can bring the country together and keep the dream of a “New Great Zimbabwe” alive. The path ahead is unclear, but the desire for freedom and change remains strong.
